Data Haves, and Have-Nots

Keynote Address
Monday, November 7, 2016 - 9:10 am

It's an accepted truth that in data science practice, 80% of the effort lies in acquiring and preparing data: work thought of as ugly, but inevitable. The final 20% has the glamor, the insights, and the headlines—today, data scientists; tomorrow, AI and bots.

Behind this 80/20 rule lurks an uncomfortable truth: access to data, not data scientists, is the real source of power. In this talk I'll discuss the practical consequences, for both consumers and corporations.
