What comes to mind when you think of Design and Data Science? If you said beautiful data visualizations, you're not alone — when IDEO partnered with Datascope Analytics to explore areas of collaboration, innovative visualizations were indeed one output. But like Data Science, Design is a complex field with many areas of focus, so surely opportunities abound when these two fields come together. In this session, Sam will discuss a few areas where we're likely to see increased partnership between Design and Data Science in the coming years, and share some concrete examples of how his team has been furthering strong partnerships between Design and Data Science at Microsoft.

As a UX Researcher, Sam is fascinated by users' stories. He's spent the past 10 years leveraging a mix of qualitative and quantitative data to support products for developers, advertisers, and data scientists. Once the MIDS program was established, Sam knew that it would provide the exact compliment to his skills as a UX Researcher. Since finishing the MIDS program last December, Sam has been building a team of UX Data Scientists who are focused on answering UX questions with a Data Science toolkit. Sam also leads the Special Interest Group in Mixed Methods Research at Microsoft, with the goal of building better partnerships between UX and Data Science across the company.
